After 2016 saw Joel Barker and the Low Company tour across WA, including the State of the Art, Hidden Treasures and Nannup Music Festivals as well as WAM’s Wheatbelt Touring Circuit, Joel Barker and the Low Company emerges this month with a new EP offering; a visceral reflection on his beloved hometown of Fremantle.
A true incarnation of a contemporary folk artist, Barker and the band conjures tales of the people around him and sonic, guitar-driven musings on his surroundings. The E.P, written and produced with by Barker and the band, focuses on Western Australia's Port City. The album artwork by Tiny Print Press was inspired by the cobbled streets and impressive heritage architecture that Fremantle is famous for.
Working closely with his fellow songwriting community, Barker also curates events such as 1x1x1: a night that focuses on delving into the hearts and minds of local solo musicians. He is also one of the faces behind the immensely popular Folk In A Box Project: an intimate, one-on- one performance space, literally held inside a wooden box constructed and toured by Barker himself. These projects have toured to the likes of Sydney International Arts Festival, Fringe World Festival and the Venice Biennale, with an overwhelmingly positive reception from audiences and artists alike.
The genuine investment and respect Barker has within his close network and wider artistic community is evident in the Pozible campaign to make this EP, where he was funded well above his initial goal.
